Interview with Emil Ekiyor:

Written and conducted by: @GoBlueInsider

ESPN Top 100 and Michigan commit Emil Ekiyor found himself competing at The Opening in Oregon this past weekend. The #3 rated Offensive Guard in the 2018 recruiting class held his own against some of the top rated defensive lineman, notably Ohio State commit Taron Vincent. Emil Ekiyor’s quick feet and fluid mechanics allow him to maintain leverage over opposing defenders. Eyikor has been committed to the Wolverines since October 2016, one of the longest standing commits of the 2018 class. While asking Ekiyor about his relationship with staff members and current UofM players, he replied, “ My primary recruiter is Coach Drevno, and some of the player’s that I talk to most often is Chris Evans and Cesar Ruiz”. The 6’3” 335 pound OL commit has been sincere with his commitment to the University of Michigan. When asking Emil about his decision to commit to Coach Harbaugh’s team, he replied “Michigan honestly just felt like home when I was there, and that feeling then and there let me know it was time for me to commit.” After asking Emil about ‘that’ feeling, he explained “I think that Michigan has a great mix of academics and athletics and that is all that I can ask for”. Ekiyor has been in consistent contact with the coaches and current Michigan pledges as he heads into his senior season at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, Indiana.

While Chris Evans coined the phrase #IndyWeOutHere, Ekiyor’s performance on the field symbolizes the meaning behind the movement. While Indianapolis isn’t known as a “pipeline” to Michigan, Ekiyor plans to help continue the trend. When asking Emil about his efforts in the recruiting process, he stated, “I have been recruiting Cam McGrone, we live in the same city”. While discussing Emil’s time at the Opening this past weekend, he believed that it was a great experience that would only help him in the long run. Many times throughout the weekend Emil battled against commits from rival schools. On one play in particular, Emil showed his dominance against an Ohio State commit Taron Vincent. Another play Emil got under the skin of Michael Thompson Jr., which almost led to a schoolyard brawl.  When asked about his feelings facing future rivals at the Opening, he stated, “Now I just have legitimate hate for those other programs and have a desire to beat them”. Ekiyor’s dominant performance at the Opening should move him up in the rankings. Ekiyor will be in attendance for Michigan’s annual BBQ in Ann Arbor. When asked about his expectations, Emil replied that, “I just want to have a good time and get a chance to bond with the other commits”. Keep an eye on Emil Ekiyor's senior season, he will push to show coaches that he can come in and make an impact as a true freshmen.
